Poultry Movements - Breeding
Jun. 26th, 2011 04:18 pmWith much drama and many ruffled feathers, I managed to move Rodrigo and his two frizzled ladies into the shed pen. I've re-stapled in some hardware cloth under the front gate, hopefully that will keep the bantams in. I'll be keeping an eye on them. This should ensure that any brooding that occurs will hatch healthy, Frizzled & smooth feathered chicks.
I've been complacent, allowing the bantam mottled Cochin chicks to stay with their duck buddies, but its time to put them in a safer location. I've basically got two options:
1) I can put them in the Bantie Barn with Napoleon and his ladies, which will breed hopefully 50/50 Frizz chicks when they brood.
2) I could put them in the much smaller Shed Pen with Rodrigo and allow him to sire more smooth feathered chicks on the ladies.
Speaking of which, I'm fairly sure I've got 2 females and 2 males among the 4 bantam chicks. I'm very sure about one, not so sure about the other. Which means I've got to sell off the extra guy(s).
Its been a busy, but housebound, day today. Went through all the bills and sorted them, which took over an hour which is nuts since I pay all our bills online. Tidied the scrap lumber out back, set up a little bantam zone in the shed coop and even refilled the outdoor waterers. Kevin came by to pickup BooBoo, thankfully, I'm too wiped to drive right now.
Time for a nap.
