See if they've got a personal trainer available who has more than a degree in aerobics. With your various health issues, your best bet is to start slowly, tailoring the workout to cause the least amount of damage possible.
Take advantage of the resources at the gym to learn how to exercise effectively. Which means a judicious mix of aerobic workouts and weight/resistance exercises, scheduled properly (i.e., don't work the same part of your body heavily two days in a row, 'n other stuff like that there.)
Combine that with a healthy diet and the extra weight will come off. (Hint: muscle burns more calories in maintenance than fat does.)
Brock, thanks for the information. I'm really out of date on this sort of science.
I'm currently planning on about 45 minutes on the recumbent bike, then hitting the Nautilus to do a double round. Whatever time is left, I'll probably hit the hot tub. All this, btw, contingent on my knee not giving out. I'll also be taking Yoga, Tai Chi and a few other classes, as available.
Yeah, we can probably do that. Chris and Sherry are kidnapping me tomorrow morning around 10am to take me to the gym, so I'll give you a ring on the way back to the house. Otherwise, you're welcome to head over and start watching Rome, etc. until I get back.
If you would like, I can e-mail you a PDF of the current Army manual on physical fitness training, which has some useful information on the physiology of exercise, and why one should structure a physical training program in certain ways. There's a lot of stuff, (road marches and team sports, for example, that aren't really relevant to what you are doing,) but it has some really useful basic information about both aerobic conditioning and strength training that is expressed in clear and simple terms. (They are currently writing these manuals to be understandable by someone with a 10th grade education, IIRC.)
It's free, and officially released for unrestricted distribution. I'd let you download it yourself, but you need an AKO password for that.
