For reasons I cannot begin to understand - HUD is coming to do a walk thru of our home as part of a survey on lead-based paint.

This is strange for two reasons:
1. HUD = Housing & Urban Development: the island is decidedly rural
2. Our house was built in 1990, so there is little chance of them finding lead paint

And I won't even go into how insane it is that they are paying us $130 for the inconvenience. More to come as this develops.

This sounds very Not Good. As in highly suspicious. Any noise about land development or zoning changes in your region?

I felt exactly the same way - it turns out Congress had ordered HUD to undertake an investigation with regards to childhood asthma and lead-levels. The folks who came took soil samples, dust samples, our vacuum cleaner bag, zapped the walls with a special gauge to check for lead, etc.

I did verify with HUD, calling the number out of the phone book to check on the folks last week. Our home was chosen at random and the check they cut for us mentioned the survey specifically.

We're zoned agricultural, so I don't think its anything with zoning issues - we're rather world reknown for our agricultural products.
