Ducky Update - EggWatch 2009!
Jun. 28th, 2009 12:47 pmWe're working with Doodle in the yard while the ducks are foraging and he's doing quite well at ignoring them. Granted, I'm not ready to try this unsupervised but I'm pleasantly surprised to find we're already at the off leash stage of his training.
The two Rouens are getting huge, not surprising as they are considered the heavyweight of domestic ducks. Until we can rig a scale, I'm guestimating Brutus and Nero are well over 4 pounds now (they can get upwards of 12). I'm so in love with these giants; their markings are so dramatic, they look almost tribal and the blue (Brutus) and aqua (Nero) stripes are so striking! Best yet, while holding them they go very still so they are actually easier to hold than many of the smaller ducks. Put them down, however, and they'll hiss to chase Libby off!
While re-arranging Brutus to hold her more securely, I felt what I think is an egg above the vent. It didn't feel sharp like part of the sternum and it moved around a bit, when I did so. I wish I knew more about the in vitro aspects of ducks. So yes, now I'm not only watching duck butts, I'm also palpitating their abdomens! EggWatch 2009 has officially begun!
I received a wonderful box from Keastree, yesterday. More to come on this, I want to post with pics!
