A Full Day of Minion
Jan. 7th, 2010 02:39 pmSam, the Farm Minion, blew the clutch on his truck and asked for an advance on his pay of $150. He was offering an additional three hours of labor, plus the 15 hours to meet the loan. After speaking to a few friends for guidance, we came up with a deal that works for both of us - he would come to work off half the amount pronto, then sign an IOU for the remainder (which his parents will sign, too). And I get five additional hours. Interest, baby!
Which means Sam is pulling an all day work-a-thon. Cleaning out the coops, rabbit pens, water bins, clearing the yard of storm debris, knocking moss off the roof, cleaning gutters, etc. Basically anything and everything I can think of, all while supervising a bonfire since the pile has grown another 10 feet sideways.
Here's Minion and his favorite bunny, Freckles:

We've had to move a Holly tree that had outgrown the space. It had grown right near a bend in the path, which means when you walk by you get the every-living crap scratched out of you. It's now been moved to Thistle's old Orchard House location, to the right of the Orchard Gate which leads to our circle. When we bought the place it was less than 2 feet tall, now it's over 6 feet and hungry. The Marans have been using it as a hide out, so we'll likely have to find a skin-friendly replacement to plant along the path for them. In the meanwhile, they can cross the orchard and curl up under the Holly. The Holly's new location is near enough to several other Holly's that I hope I haven't disrupted the twinship.
The Marans looking for their Holly tree:

The yard is stilll filled with branches, the lot of Winter life on Whidbey Island. They aren't really useful for anything but rain cover to a farm, but the do break the wind and provide a comfy nesting place for the birds.

We are slowly smoldering away the bonfire at the back of the property, so most of the birds are hanging out at the front of the yard near the fences at this point. Which creates the odd joy of duck puddles:
