More Mammas!
Aug. 24th, 2010 09:11 pmAt some point, we noticed that Ruby was pulling a disappearing act but with everything going on around here we didn't worry much. Scarlett was calm, exactly her same irascible self so we knew Ruby must be alive and well somewhere. Turns out she was brooding in the bottom on the old rabbit hutch brooder. She's on an insanely large clutch of eggs, most of which do not look to be hers (white eggs, smaller brown eggs, etc.). At some point, I must have mentioned it either here or on FB, but damn if I can find the reference so I have no idea how long this has been going on. If someone remembers me mentioning a broody Rhodie, could you please let me know? I'm brain dead from the continued onslaught of cute.
Saturday we moved her to the coop pen, with the thought that should she begin hatching we'd need to have her and her chicks safe and sound. I keep checking on them, but not a single peep yet. If they turn out not to be viable, I'll order some fertilized eggs for her to brood. She's pulled out all the feathers of her lower chest and upper belly, I'd hate for her to have gone through all that and end up without any chicks!
So, having settled Ruby in the pen just this weekend, Luca decided to go ahead and hatch a few of her own ducklings. We now have 3 cutie patootie Khaki Campbell/Runner mix ducklings in the old duck pen. I've temporarily relocated them to the old duck pen, though I'd really like to get her in the coop pen where Ruby is (if I only knew how long she'd been brooding, damnit!). This weekend, Josh and Kevin are going to build a sort of pallet chicken tractor to place on the west side of the coop. The plan is to have it independent, so we can move it about or place it there. Should be a good starting place chicks and ducklings. Though I must admit, I'd really prefer having it the future home of a few Japanese Banties! (shh, don't tell hubby!)
