I was mostly okay until the part about the mom trying to find a hibernating toad for the dog at 4 am so the mom could go back to bed. Then I cracked up!

I can completely envision that poor mother out on her back porch, staring at the dog searching the yard, jumping back and forth from tiptoe to tiptoe wishing it would hurry up.
