These First Days of Sun

While not officially Spring, you couldn't tell by the gorgeous mild day we're having. I have the back door and windows open to the breeze and warmth. I'm moving slowly under the hay fever meds, but trying to get a few things done. I really need to get the house tidied up, then cleaned. I broke down yesterday and did something I swore I'd never do - I bought chicken-themed decor items. *hangs head in shame*. Granted, they are more modern folkcraft than country kitch. I might even get a few reproduction metal farm sign to decorate the new coop.

"Neighborhood kids have been coming by, with new friends and younger siblings who are finally old enough to come over without their parents. The dogs are in high spirits, which I'm grateful for as I had to practically sit on Gracie last night to brush the snarls out of her fur. She was so disappointed in me, she slept out in the living room last night instead of stretched out along my back.

Noah is hard at work in Bunhalla. I'd discovered a tunnel opening in the combined pen, Noah found out it went down roughly 2 feet. We'll need to keep the hay level down in the pen to ensure they don't do this to the point where they can get out. While I'd love to have rabbits scampering out in the backyard, it's not safe with the bassets. They wouldn't mean to hurt them but they'd trample them accidentally or become overly aroused and play rougher than would be safe.

The rabbits in the combined pen are having a marvelous time. Thistle, our pirate bunny, has been grooming Nod, Winken and Martha. It would appear that he's actually taking care of the angoras coats, when I went out this morning I didn't see any mats in their fur. The little bunny, Hex (aka Midnite) seems to be calming down a bit, though she still doesn't want to leave. I've tried a half dozen times to pull her out of the pen to bring her back inside and somehow she always knows and hides in Thistle's little house. I'm fairly happy to let her stay out there - she's not hurting anything or anyone and she seems happier to be in a rabbit community.

This afternoon we are trying an experiment. After Noah cleans out the blue shed coop, I'm going to put the brooder chicks in it. I can keep the shed coop up to the needed temperature with two lights and this will ensure they have enough room to play and grow. The Rhodies will go back to using the hutch coop, glad I didn't burn the ugly thing in hopes of using it for isolation-type purposes. Ruby has already been sleeping in it, I've been tucking her back in the shed with Scarlett each night. This switch will give me a few more weeks to whine and guilt friends into helping me build the new coop. Or alternatively, finding a contractor who will actually show up. Grr.

I can hear the neighborhood kids out and about, next door T.C. is singing to himself. One of the teenagers around the block is practicing his electric guitar in the garage, from the sounds of it he needs to learn how to tune it. Ah well, there's all the time in the world today."

I've got to get back outside and do a few things.
