Waxing philosophical...
Feb. 27th, 2005 09:40 pmThinking today, as we pack our books, breakables and the very many DVDs, CDs and crap that we own -
In less than two weeks, we will grab the furries, our overnight bags and head over to the new home, never to return to this dreary and dark apartment... A house that we will choose the paint, the architecture, the renovation, the landscaping, etc. with very little external countrol, whatsoever.
Now, having spent considerable time during my single years shopping for condos and townhouses, I became rather disenchanted with the onus of the 'board' and the amount of rules inherent in that style of housing. Management companies, tenant boards, community zoning laws...the list goes on and on.
Having spent a rather large portion of my adult life avoiding responsibility for a yard, a roof, structural integrity and other odd lot assortments of homeownership woes, I'm now wondering at my lack of concern for all that. Yeah, gender roles abound. The yard, roof and crap is pretty much Josh's problem. Decorating will be mostly under my control, with the obvious horror of the idea of the Den (aka "The Man Cave") Things like electric outlets, new light fixtures, locks and doorknobs...that's stuff we can both handle.
So what then is the nature of homeownership?
Frankly, all I can think of is taking my debt from a paltry $7000 student loan to half of $160,000 for the house.
Yeah, I'll be lucky if I can sleep at all in the next 30 years or so until our VA is paid off.
