Last night was the second of the three annual Harvest Burns at our home - the first sadly cancelled due to a burn ban in effect due to a drought, the next planned for Samhain. This is an open event for WIPNO folks, and we had a wonderful time.

The saga begins, as most things do in my life, with me walking in the front door. Danielle had the kitchen torn up, re-aranging the drawers. This was something we'd discussed doing and Danielle is definately the type to just start up on a project around the house. One of the very many reasons I'm grateful for her housekeeping talents! She had a box going for garage sale items, a pile of "what the hell are these things?" for me to decipher and a large garbage can rapidly filling. The fridge and pantry already having been tackled - I rolled up my sleeves and did the requisite dishes while we chatted about prepping for the night.

Josh had been busy getting the burn ready, having been to the Commissary and bought way too much food (as always), so we had brauts, beer and smore makings at the ready. We lit hanging candles through the yard and put up additional lighting (even on a full moon, with all these trees our yard remains very dark) for safety. At some point in the frivolity of getting ready, the Halloween decorations were found - and what followed was an orgy of electricity, pumpkins, cauldrons and witches!

Folks started arriving soon after 8pm, and the festivities began. You know that friend, every group has one, who can be counted upon to regale you with hysterical stories for an entire evening? That's our Kevin (aka Chicken) who fed the fire in ways both symbolic and mundane. Frankly, I just sat back with a beer and let him run the show. Very relaxing and no stress at all.

We were graced with a perfect Harvest Moon - large, bright, surrounded by mists and clouds. The evening was cold enough to enjoy the fire, warm enough not to be uncomfortable and I'd say dry - but Danielle's talents in the house nonwithstanding, her aim with a garden hose is sadly lacking.

A lovely night indeed.
