trystinn: (ducklings)
This morning began with our neighbor, Charlotte (Patrick's wife) dropping by to let us know Luca and her ducklings were paddling around their front yard. She was out there having a blast taking pictures and video of the ducks. Thank the Powers That Be that we have such gracious, humorous neighbors. Josh headed over with a very large bucket and the pond net. Best duck catching apparatus ever! Given this development, we have decided to give the mammas and ducklings full range of the backyard in the hopes they'll stay in it where they won't stay in the pen. Cross your fingers for us.

Unfortunately, I spent most of the night coughing. This damn sinus cold has settled down in my lungs. So no fun Japanese cultural festival for us today. Sorry, [livejournal.com profile] alfrecht! Kevin and Josh are out doing guy stuff, I'm curled up at home with the four dogs.

Slight tangent here. Never watch a bad adventure movie with two Naval aviation guys who have both fixed helicopters for a living. We watched Cliffhanger earlier and the entire movie they were mocking the helicopter scenes: "You can't fly a Huey one handed!", "There's only three hour of gas in that sucker!", "Yep, like a helicopter pilot could hold a copter steady for that amount of time", "if that copter was up that high, the pilot would need additional oxygen", "diesel fuel ain't explosive", etc. I now have a bit more sympathy for those who have watched witchcraft movies with me. *grin*

Ruby's clutch is officially nonviable. She's been on that clutch since August 18th and today is the 24th day. We'll be destroying the eggs and moving her out of the coop pen today. This isn't an easy process, broody hens are notoriously difficult to break of their broodiness. Scarlett has taken up brooding under the coop, of course, so she's our next broody. *sigh*

Speaking of, we're still testing the incubator. So far it taps out at 93 degrees, so we're trying a fresh bulb to see if that helps. We've also finally hooked up the water delivery tubing, though the guys broke the acrylic in the process. I've been holding off ordering the eggs until we've got this temperature issue sorted out.

Given much I admired the sweetheart Frizzle at the Fair, I've decided to try my hand breeding Frizzled Cochins (standard sized). There's several dozens of breeders for banties in the U.S., but no one seems to be breeding the standards around here and barely anywhere else. Could be a nice niche for us, given we can breed Frizzle hens to our Cochin rooster, Big Blue. You need to breed a Frizzle to a smooth feather, so that works pretty well - we'll end up with roughly 50/50 smooth to Frizzle but there's a market for the smooth Cochins, too.
