Poultry Movements
Jul. 4th, 2011 10:38 amI did something so insanely practical, I'm almost delirious with it. Instead of freaking out and desperately trying to cobble something together at the very last moment, I actually went out and bought a hutch for the new mammas! Its sitting right outside the back porch door, where I can keep an eye on it by walking by the foyer doors.
Here's our new Mommy & Me hutch, faithfully guarded by Gracie. The hutch desperately needs a punny name. Any ideas?

Mamma Mia hatched out a duckling yesterday, but still has a half dozen or so eggs. She brought the duckling over this morning and proceeded to ignore her completely. So I nabbed the little duckling, Prima, and popped it in the new hutch. I gave two of our Silkies the option to foster mom: Fooz was distinctly not interested, Wendy is considering it. We'll give it awhile, see how they do. So far Prima is very content to sit on Wendy's foot feathers. She's essentially suspended off the ground on a cushion of feathers. Will try to get a picture of this! *grin* (Yes, for those who track such things, I have another Silkie I could have tried, but Wendy took over mamma duties, so we didn't have to!)
Wendy and Prima:

Also, I must brag: I got a screaming deal on the hutch. Its regularly $256, but it was on sale (likely mismarked) for $112. I was absolutely thrilled to get such a great hutch for so little! Sure, its designed for rabbits, but it can be easily converted for poultry use at a future date with a box and a dowel for roosting.
