I think I'd rather be holding a Sazerac, come the end, or possibly some really smooth single malt, but aside from that, I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment.

I think there may be a slight generational and gender bias.

Me, I'll be holding onto a frozen margarita!

Likely you're right. And I'll admit to being a snarky old curmudgeon with regard to martinis: a martini is a cocktail made with gin or vodka and white vermouth. It may be garnished with a twist of lemon rind or with an olive. Anything else is NOT a martini.

The Sazerac, OTOH, is a classic New Orleans preparation, made with rye whisky, a bit of simple syrup, and the New Orleans local products Peychaud's Bitters and Herbsaint (an anise-flavoured liqueur similar to Pernod.) The Sazerac may be the oldest cocktail recipe, as it's been served in New Orleans since well before the American Revolution. It's a preparation that should be sipped graciously, rather than swilled.

Generation bias? Well, yeah...

Hey, I'm a huge fan of the Sidecar. I adore watching bartenders groan, yank out the mixing book and look it up. So there.

My Mum adores dirty Martinis, which just make me crawl. She hasn't any idea how old and gross that olive juice is.

Hmmm...I wonder if I'd enjoy a martini more if I paired it with chocolate. ;-) I too agree with that sentiment.
