Catching Up

We managed to make it to Olympia yesterday and were greeted at the Washington Grange Hall. Apparently no one bothered to let them know we were calling, so most of the employees had taken the day off to go hunting. Such is life. So many Granges have retired their charter, given that their leadership is aged and they haven't managed to capture the commitment of younger generations. This, of course, makes for storage rooms full of Grange materials and equipment. Unfortunately, it's all completely disorganized - essentially just thrown into various storage rooms and closets along the 3 floors of the Grange Hall. It took us 2 hours to put together what we needed - Grange Manuals, song books, flags, flag holders, gavel, symbols and sashes. Needless to say, I had a ball in the old library. It's a good thing Josh made it down there to meet us and pull me out of the library.

Our Grange is using the Old Traditional format, so we're using the 1986 manuals. Anything after that used the Modern version; i.e. President has replaced Master, etc. It's going to take me weeks to catch up on all the reading, especially the part about the filing and record keeping requirements.

Unfortunately, my allergies are worse than ever. Hanging about in dusty rooms did not help. Add to that, the Washington State Ferry System canceled the Port Townsend ferry last night without telling anyone, so we had to drive 3 hours around via 2 ferries. 40 - 50 mph winds made for an exciting ride home. We're supposed to go to a Murder Mystery Party (we're supplemental characters) but at this rate I'm not sure we're going to make it.

In better news, another 6 eggs this morning. One was so incredibly large it cannot possibly fit in the standard egg crates. I'm going to have to order crates for goose eggs and get an egg scale. These are quite easy to get on Ebay, but can be oddly pricey if you want an antique.

The Wind & Tide Bookshop will be closed Sundays in November. I'll be covering for another employee's shifts on Monday, instead. I'm really looking forward to having the extra time to hang out with the hubby.

The grange nearest our house, Rome Grange is very active. There are a lot of older folks, but a lot of younger ones too. They hold debates for all of the local and regional political candidates. Needless to say, they are a pretty staunchly democratic bunch of farmers...
