3 events, two births, one death:

February 6th

1778 - American Revolutionary War: In Paris the Treaty of Alliance and the Treaty of Amity and Commerce are signed by the United States and France signaling official recognition of the new republic
1900 - The international arbitration court at The Hague is created when the Netherlands' Senate ratifies an 1899 peace conference decree.
1978 - The Blizzard of 1978, one of the worst Nor'easters in New England history, hit the region, with sustained winds of 65 mph and snowfall of 4" an hour.

1564 - Christopher Marlowe, English playwright (d. 1593)
1895 - Babe Ruth, baseball player (d. 1948)

1918 - Gustav Klimt, Austrian painter (b. 1862)

The wierd thing about the list, is I remember the storm in 1978, we were living on Long Island at the time and got hit pretty hard. I spent a lot of time worrying about Cynetta (a sort of honorary grandmom) who lived in Vermont and kept asking if we should pick up Grandma & Grandpa who lived in Arizona, but somehow I thought they lived at the airport until I was almost 8.

The blizzard of '78, I was at college. NIU / DeKalb. The wind hadn't stopped since Davenport Iowa, and while there were only 3-4' of snow on the ground in town, the drifts out in the countryside went to 15' at phone poles and the like. They closed the town. THEN they closed the college! Hell, the college hadn't even closed for the blizzard of '65?6?, so this was a Big Deal (tm).

Yes, I meant fifteen FEET. It got mighty deep out thar ... :X Took 'em awhile to find all the county roads.

Fortunately, I had me a nice stash and a bottle in the closet, and food was provided ... it was *all* good. :D

Awww, for some reason, I have always adored storm stories. There's something amazingly pure, yet primative about the stories told by folks tucking in for a good Whiter. I well recall some of the idiocyncracies about college closings in New England - the concept being "hell, the students are trapped here anyway, may as well teach them!"

The winter of '78 was responsible for an awful lot of births in '79 among my mother's friends. Its a very old gag back East. I'm sure you saw a bit of this, yourself. 15' to the poles? Yikes!

I well remember Granda telling repeating the old phrase about riding out storms: "A bottle of wine, a loaf of bread and thou - but not necessarily in that order!" Which oddly enough, someone wrote on the bathroom door at our bookstore!
