Naughtiness in Seattle

Took Josh today to Travelers & Edge of the Circle, neither of which he'd been to before. Bought some yummy teas, loose herbs, fresh resins (oxymoron, anyone?) and a great new censer Josh had wanted for some time. Josh bought a few pagan t-shirts and bumper stickers (sigh on the last one, I'll borrow them often). Whenever I go into a bookstore I feel like I'm cheating on the Wind & Tide. So here's my sin(s):

Dion Fortune: "Winged Bull" & "Demon Lover" - thus filling out by Dion Fortune fiction collection.

Barbara Black Koltuv, Ph.D.: "The Book of Lilith" - something I've been curious about

Nigel Jackson & Michael Howard: "Pillars of Tubal-Cain"
- something I've been REALLY curious about for a long time

Though, I'm not truly sinful as none of our distributors could find any of the above - I did manage to get one of the "Greenmantle" by Charles de Lint re-prints from our bookstore. And have already finished it. Gods I need to read more of his stuff.

Must trot along now, naughtiness with hubby to begin in...3....2...1...

You simply must read Jack of Kinrowan a.k.a. Drink Down the Moon and Jack the Giant Killer in an omnibus collection.

Oh yeah--you also must read Spiritwalk, Moonheart and Yarrow.

His newer stuff is good, but his older stuff is fsck'ing powerful.

I grew up in the places Charles writes about. They are absolutely magic. If you ever go to Ottawa, take the time to go hear him play his music at a pub downtown. It's great.

Is Fortune's fiction any good from a literary point of view? I'm always nervous to read occult fiction by occultists.

PoTC is ... okay. There's some good pointers, but all in all, I didn't feel there was that much "new" info in it - but I'm jaded, of course, by virture of being brought in when rocks were still soft.

Literary POV? Well, compared to Bulwer-Lytton she's a frickin' genius - but typical of the era. That having been said, Fortune's The Sea Priestess and Moon Magic have certainly inspired enough rites and rituals over the decades. I enjoy it,

Yep, she does a take on the "Hero's Journey" that involves initiation in the plot & character development - its a bit unique, but it is a product of the 1930s so one needs to adjust accordingly.

Modern tastes being what they are - Fortune's books move a bit slow until you get caught up in them.
