When I cut back shifts at the bookstore to only Sundays, I didn't realize quite how profoundly my imput would be diminished. Now I know.

There's not a single book in our occult section that I'd buy or recommend to another. Its returned to its previous fluffy state.

Update: a high school gal just came in the store asking about biographies and since that section is somewhat hidden towards the back of the store, I walked her back there asking if there was anyone in particular she had in mind. "Oh you know, Elizabeth the First. Sir Francis Drake..." she explained. After realizing she needed historical figures, I took her up to the History section and handed her a few, which she all declined, including an excellent one on Susan B. Anthony. When I asked her to clarify what she needed, she said, with all seriousness: "Oh you know, it has to be something on Great American figures, its for Advanced AP History."

It was all I could do to keep myself from laughing out loud.

Wow. Just wow.

If we keep dumbing down the school curriculum pretty soon we'll end up with college grads not knowing the 50 states or some such. Wait, I bet some of them don't.

Welcome to my world! I get to deal with these children everyday. I remember I was starting a Western Civ class and I mentioned that we would start with the Paleolithic and I had a student state, "There was not Paleolithic age because Jesus was not born yet." Sigh.
