Wiped Out and Grinning
Feb. 17th, 2008 03:43 pmThe Women of Wisdom conference went beautifully, everyone in attendance (let's say 9 women to every man) had a lovely time learning and sharing. During a five and a half hour rehearsal we realized we had serious lighting and microphone issues. Paula and I, as the narrators, had scripts to read yet the lighting was either a) too bright to read or b) non-existent. And while we have naturally loud voices (shut up) and can project throughout an auditorium with ease, we cannot do so over multiple drums, basses, flutes, etc. which are individually miked. Once a mic was located another problem reared its head - we had no speaker, so we could not hear ourselves at all. Ah well, we soldiered on. No huge gaffs, fortunately and while the audience was a bit tough starting out, we managed to inspire them to dance before intermission.
The individual acts were wondrous, I am now seriously dedicated to the cult worship of Lorraine Bayes. A charming woman who writes and performs songs that manage to be achingly beautiful, deeply personally spiritual and yet catchy at the same time. Gracious, intense, quiet - an amazing elder all the way around. Sadly, I didn't have the opportunity (I was on stage the entire show) to chat with Sobunfu Somé, Ferron, Carolyn Brandy, Susan Armstrong & Kellianna but they were each amazing! Our beautiful flutist Diane, fortunately, was seated in front of Paul and I on stage left - lots of laughter, joking and appreciation for her amazing talents. The dancers, whom sadly I never learned all the names of, had me reciting my lines through awe inspired tears each time they danced. The Sacred Fire Choir was amazing, under the gentle guidance of Reverend Robert Wade. Paula and I hammed it up at every available opportunity where appropriate. From the "potty poll" I took during intermission, we may request the opportunity to write and perform our own humorous skits to announce each individual act next year. Or just put on our own show, frankly, there's certainly enough material we come up with hanging out together!
