Considering chickens
Jun. 9th, 2008 05:26 pmI'm always considering getting chickens. Its become this odd thing, especially topical after reading Barbara Kingsolver's "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" at my mother's home. I try very hard to keep our home eco-friendly - I don't use chemicals on the property and I'm in the process of converting our home to white vinegar, etc. eco-cleaners. I like to think we do pretty well, I only create one or two cans of garbage a month, the rest is either compost or recycling.
Which brings me to hay. As you can imagine, with eleven rabbits we produce a lot of dirty hay and poop. We recover the poop to make rabbit tea for local gardeners and the soggy, dirty hay has become the composting ingredient du jour around the neighborhood. My poop is infamous, lemme tell you. So when Meghan and I needed eggs, I called Lori our neighbor who raises organic chickens to see if she had extra. She had an extra dozen, which she gladly traded for two huge containers of dirty hay.
So again, considering chickens. Seems there's quite a few chickens who need re-homing in the area, so I needn't wait until next spring as I'd been planning. Now, I need to consider where I can build a coop with warm nesting areas and build a tractor or two for the yard. Downwind, of course, as probably not too terribly close to the outdoor ritual Circle. Dunno how the Gods feel about chickens and not quite in the mood to interview each. *WEG*
Decisions, decisions.
