I've been looking for a way to donate to Obama's campaign, but was looking for that *right* thing. If that makes sense at all.

And I found it.

http://www.mendingbeeforchange.org/

To think this is happening in Prospect Park, right across from my old apartment in Brooklyn.

Lemme explain what you're seeing here, because the site doesn't really do that well. This is a large, homemade flag out of parachute fabric. Some folks come to play on/in/under it, some folks come to gaze at it. Some folks (anyone really) come to mend it. And some really special folks sponsor a star on it. So far the flag has 3 out of 50 so there's lots of work left to do.

So here's how it works to sponsor the mending of this flag. You download the form and get sponsors (a quarter, 50 cents, a dollar) per stitch and you collect all those sponsorship monies and send them to the site.

I love the metaphor of this. Some of us tramp on our liberties and our freedoms, others mend it. But mending anything has a cost. Are we willing to pay for that privilege?

Betsy Ross would be damn proud. Given Rosa Park's love of sewing, I think she'd get a kick out of it, too.
