Furkid Friday - Introducing Dozer

As a few of you already know, we've been keeping an eye out for another basset since Tracker passed. We needed a rather special guy - male (because Gracie doesn't seem to like other females) and one without a predatory drive (good luck) given the bunnies and cats.
We finally found our guy, right here at WAIF. Here's Dozer, likely to be known by the nickname Doozy, a Bagel (basset/beagle mix). He's not as pretty as Flash, but then, who could be? He also has a fairly severe birth defect on his left leg (his 'wrist' bends forward, not back), which thankfully doesn't bother him at all.
He's fit in perfectly, Gracie likes him and Flash is absolutely thrilled to have another hound in the home. Dozer comes to his name and has, in roughly an hour, already figured out the dog door pretty well. He rides well in the van (which is now fixed, thank hubby!) and seems to have made himself at home. He's still learning sit and "stay out of the kitchen!" but all in all, it's a perfect match. We'll see how he does with laundry.
So of course, there are pictures! Gotsa hog your Flist page.
You can see his left leg deformity in this one, but isn't he cute?

Happy boy :)

Date: 2009-03-04 09:43 pm (UTC)If we weren't moving at the end of the summer, I'd seriously be agitating for the senior basset that's at the humane society right now. I keep dreaming about bassets. It's a sign!!!!

Date: 2009-03-04 10:39 pm (UTC)ION, I think Flash needs to come visit Frances. I would marvel at what he could teach a 2 1/2 week old lamb, especially in this house. ;)

Date: 2009-03-04 10:42 pm (UTC)I can tell you Flash adores sheep, so he and Frances would likely get along famously.

Date: 2009-03-04 11:15 pm (UTC)Mostly we use furniture covers that are washable and vacuum a lot with a shop vac. At least the leather you can wipe down with a wet wipe.

Date: 2009-03-05 12:52 am (UTC)I never understood that whole "baby envy" thing mothers talked about. Now I get it. Looking at your pictures make me want to adopt another dog. I have furbaby envy!

Date: 2009-03-05 03:25 am (UTC)I think the beagle input makes him look a bit less, well, "depressed" than many bassets do.

Date: 2009-03-05 08:08 am (UTC)Although you must admit, in the pic with both dogs, Flash DOES look like he's going "Mom, did we reeeeeally need another one?"

Date: 2009-03-05 05:59 pm (UTC)What do Libby and Fudge think of this latest development?
no subject
Date: 2009-03-05 07:35 pm (UTC)Libby seems completely unfazed, she plopped right down next to Flash and started nursing. She even hung out on my shoulder while the boys were curled up on either side of me on the leather chair last night.
Fudge is Fudge - "we needed another one of these things?" but didn't even bat an eyelash when Dozer sniffed him.

Date: 2009-03-05 09:22 pm (UTC)Then again, I can't think of a better person to have him if he may need some special considerations when he gets older. :)

Date: 2009-03-05 09:28 pm (UTC)I figure he'll probably have another five years or so before that poor joint just gives out, even though the vet who saw the x-rays insists it's stable. At that point, we'll see what's best for him. Likely as not that will be amputation, IMHO, though I've seen all sorts of braces for this sort of thing. But we'll have to take it as it comes. Josh and I have already discussed the possibility of putting in a ramp to the back porch to make it easier on him.
*Thank you*
