Yeah, I had a few hundred of these things growing up...I think most girls did at one time or another of our generation. Mostly I let them run amok in the Barbie Dream House Da bought me (I wasn't a Barbie gal, so what else was I going to do with it?)

Time flies...

I was talking to an old opera friend this afternoon whom I met singing in the Grace Chorale Society of Brooklyn, getting up to date on her life and bringing her up to date on my and she went sort of quiet before saying "wow, I would never have imagined you living out in the boondocks. You loved the City." Stef remembers combing the Village with me for good bookstores, finding new little bistros to enjoy on a Sunday and my eternal Sunday morning presence in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden to read the NYT. We used to take long drives up to my parent's place in the Berkshires or the family cabin in Newfane, Vt. There was even a hysterical trip to the horse races in Saratoga, NY.

I may as well have become a Fundamentalist, for all she can recognize her old "club bud" in me. We've both kind of gone in different directions, she's all but married to her girlfriend, they're looking at co-ops in Brooklyn Heights this weekend. At one point she made me promise I wouldn't become a Repulican! I assured her I was incapable of changing that much and she seemed relieved.

I realized that for quite a few of my New England friends, my life has taken a really unexpected turn. I know a few feel like I've let them down by turning in my DKNY clothes for gardening jeans. Hopefully next visit to the Northeast I can actually spend time with them since our holiday visit was all about the engagement party and getting up for a big family reunion at the Dorset Inn.

Chances are, I'm not going to be able to talk them into coming here for a visit, sadly.
