I've been watching the Earth awaken this last week with amazement and awe. Crocus and Daffie shoots are pushing up, tender little leaf buds are working their way out of branches, and the winter nip in the air is gone even though its still in the forties. Formerly dry and denuded branches are covered in that lightest of new green leaves, that special green tone that one never mistakes for anything other than spring growth.

All these little signs building together to form a new Earth. I'm afraid to blink.

And then it hails. And all bets are off. What a ride!

Seems to be that sort of earth-happy day!

We had bulbs sending up greenery in January. They didn't much care for the 4" of snow that got dumped on their wee puddin' heads.

Awww, poor bulbs. Any chance they will recover?

The mainland had a hell of a snow storm tonight, yet only a bit of hail here - which was eagerly gobbled up by willing puppies and not a whit of it left, oddly enough.

Not sure, at present, if the road trip will be delayed by the weather.

The ones that were up before the snow fell are looking kind of tired, but there are other things popping now. Can't believe I haven't seen a single crocus yet! Unless my eyes deceive me, however, there will be dozens of them next to Jay's side door.

I guess some of the trees are starting to bud as well as I've seen squirrels nibbling on the ends of branches.

Hope the weather clears in time for your Highway to Hell tour. :)

I was pretty amazed to see crocus, myself. Or at least, what I recall is a bed of crocus - this winter feels longer than any I can recall since moving here.

I'm going to attempt to figure out the voice post option on LJ over the next few days, as I'm not sure I want to be carting around a laptop!

mmm...grits...

oh, sorry, got distracted.

Crocuses. Yes. Our *were* coming up, I don't know if they've survived the foot of snow that fell here yet. gotta love the Cailleach's featherbed shaking!

While the roads will likely be all nice and clear of snow by Saturday, I'm supposed to be helping with [livejournal.com profile] seaf setup sometime soon, and I don't know when that is. Where are folk going to get together, and maybe I do at least do a drive-by???

Fair warning: I'm told I have "porn voice", which is why I've been in charge of every outgoing voicemail message at offices!

I'll do some testing to see how well the accent does!

I love this post. It reminds me of this poem. Congrats, you qualify as one of the quiet.

There Was a Change Today

There was a change today
only the quite will notice.
The rain falls the same way,
throws itself into the drowning earth.
It is always raining here.

Each tree still stiff with winter cold.
No buds. No leaves. No greening shoots.
Yet, I feel a weak yellow heartbeat
threading through the branches.

And the earth in places,
and the air
tastes different, rounder
lingering in the mouth.
Exposed stones duck down,
sink their toes in, waiting.

The sparrows feeding on store bought seed
peck slowly, fly with less worry
reassured by instinctual foreknowledge.

Soon. Soon.
The Season rolls over in her sleep.
The rain falls the same way and
only the quiet will notice.

Awww, thank you. Dare I ask who the author is?

Btw, we're going to be staying in Everett - is that close enough for a visit over the next few days?

I am the author of that poem. Bellingham is an hour north of Everett. I am a mass transit guy, so I stay pretty close to home. If you guys were headed north I would totally tell you to come and visit me.

That or we can go out. Company is such a treat for me living as far North as I do. All the Canadians head straight down to Seattle and all of the Seattle people stay put.
