Here it is, the labor of a day's work:

Two challahs and one of two (the other we've been nibbling on all afternoon) of light rye.

I made a pretty mild one (milk based vs beer, etc.) and since I'm not a fan of caraway seeds unless its in a very sour rye, no optional add ons.

If I've got enough, I'm going with a beer-based one this weekend - hope the co-op has restocked their rye flour. (Which you would think is the rarest substance on earth around here!)

Oh yes!

Btw, odd tech question. When you download a PDF from a website (Esnips, in this instance) and it won't give you any options to Save - anyway to force it? There's no way I can read 300 pages in one sitting or print out books that long!

If you're reading it in acrobat reader inside your browser, click the "disk" icon on the acrobat toolbar to save a copy locally...

Believe it or not, the disk icon isn't clickable for some PDFs. Always the PDFs I really, really want because they are rare books.

Any neat little trick otherwise? (And yes, I've tried the File menu, too)

Firefox.. "DownThemAll" plugin/extension should do the trick.

Crap. Never mind, I found a way to trick it. *WEG*

I'm pretty impressed by this silly website, if only it had a decent search parameter method.

Would you be willing to share your challah recipe?

Already have, its posted on [livejournal.com profile] the_leaven, our breadie group, yesterday morning.

This is a small recipe, for a household of a single person or couple. Probably the only one I've found that didn't feed twelve!

Its one of those things you just get the urge to make, then wear yourself out doing and put off for a long time! There's just something about a challah!

Its a one-day recipe with a small yield - so I only made two loaves, one a three-strand braid, the other a spiral. I also sprinkle kosher salt on mine, which seems to be an Ashkenazi thing. Next time, I'm going to try making a bird spiral again - been years.

Why thank you!

Odd note: Relish forks make the cutest little "poke" holes in rye bread. And oddly enough, my Mum bought me a set of silver ones for our handfasting.

Relish forks. *shakes head*

That looks so good I can almost smell the hot bread. A little butter and honey and we're on an Imram.

They are delicious, let me assure you! I'll make sure to have some fresh bread ready when DB comes up to get her bunnies - are you coming with her??

I've got your PDF, thank you - taking my time editing, so possibly by tomorrow evening I'll have it sent back to you with comments.

Yep, that's the egg glaze on the challah and butter glaze on the rye. Fabulously shiney bread!

I do miss a good bakery, haven't had a decent one in the neighborhood since I lived in Brooklyn.

Now, I'm jealous. :)
