Given our northern location, Whidbey tends to be fairly cool but we do have our summers, usually just in time for the 4th of July. This year, the heat came a week early, right after the churches started erecting their fireworks sale tents. Given the heat, I didn't bring Flash to work, for which he was hugely disappointed. Said disappointment was lessened by a visit from Kevin (aka Chicken) home from a deployment aboard the USS John Stennis. Kevin, of course, thought we got another dog - not recognizing Gracie right away.

Very few businesses here have air conditioning and those who have it, haven't been running it. This I know because folks have been coming in the store to report it. I'm always a bit bemused by this reporting. The bookstore holds no legal authority (that I know of), yet folks insist on telling us this. Usually in very offended tones!

The heat has brought the folks out, though blessed few are purchasing books. Lots of friends visiting today, looking about the shop and chatting. Always lovely to see folks and of course, a few are checking in to see how things are going. I've put out a few requests for help with the Bunhalla beautification project, it will be interesting to see if folks show up. I've put out a few more invitations to the 13 Indigenous Grandmothers, a bit of young blood would do us good.

Sorry, rambling now. Too hot to think.

Ahhh heat and retail...how I hated that combination. When I worked at Hallmark we were dying in the summer because the air circulation system was messed up - the front of the store got really hot, while the back of the store and backroom were cold. So far as I know it never got fixed. It sucked ass though... Cash was at the front, our dress code was black, and if you didn't want to wear pants you couldn't wear non-dress shoes. We instigated an unofficial mandatory duty of one person each shift would leave during a slow period and run to get cold drinks (our manager wouldn't let us to have a mini fridge, and complained if someone brought a cooler).

Oh geez. I worked in Mesa, Az for many years and we did whatever was necessary to stay cool. The one time I got in "trouble" for not wearing pantyhose, I retorted I'd quit before I wore them in 120 F heat and so would every other woman in the office.

Ewwww, I hate pantyhose on a cold day! Were your bosses male? lol. I hope for the sake of my previous coworkers that the AC was fixed. I quit there for a few reasons, and I haven't really been back in. Our manager had next to no idea what was going on in the store, we were the only one of three Hallmark franchises owned by this company that wasn't in a mall, and our manager tried to run us like we were. The only reason she did any of the testing etc was because soooo many customers complained about this horrible smell, so she had air quality tests done. We all could have told her the air quality sucked - on a day with a good breeze blowing, if someone went out back to put garbage in the dumpsters and left the door to the storeroom open, the front doors would fly open. None of these doors are in line with each other.
