Hay fever has set in and I'm fairly miserable: sneezing, congestion and very tired. Dozer, aka the Doodle Bug, has been very sweet, hanging out with me and watching me with his deep, worried eyes.

I had to send the laptop back in (again), because Lenovo hadn't fixed the wireless connection after all. Now they are claiming they must re-image the hard drive since it's a "software issue" and they need to "update the drivers". This, btw, after insisting it was a board issue last time. Since this whole mess got started the *first* time we sent it in for something unrelated, I'm highly skeptical. Especially since all Lenovo will do is wipe it and re-install a basic image (I'll have to re-load Windows XP & MS Office) - how then are they going to test the wireless, I wonder?

In any case, I'm expecting a call back from them soon since the gal who called to explain the situation wasn't a tech and had such a thick accent she was all but unintelligible. Granted, my ears are quite blocked, but generally I can follow along with accents fairly well.

So let's keep track of all this Lenovo crap:
replaced wireless card - didn't fix it
replace board - didn't fix it
now wants to re-image the hard drive - wtf?

Yep, I'm cranky.

Re-imaging should put a new Operating System on the computer. That's what it is, putting the basic installed OS image back on the hard drive. You should have to reinstall Office, but not XP (unless the Levono came with a different Operating System?). In fact, if it really is a driver/OS problem, reinstalling the OS again when you get the computer back may very well bring the problem back. If they're right (and it sounds a bit squirelly to me), the problem is with the version of the drivers that you have, so reinstalling the OS and putting your drivers back on will bring the problem right back. Not at all clear why they aren't just having you update the drivers if they think that's the problem. It's not that hard to talk someone through.

This kinda sounds like a "we don't know what the problem is so distract her with a pony" solution to me. I can't recall that I've ever had a wireless problem in Windows that wasn't either hardware, or just a simple driver install.

The laptop came pre-installed with XP Pro, which they had better put back on it. And yes, we updated the drivers when I first started calling them about this problem and before we replaced the wireless card.

The IBM T42 doesn't have a manual wireless switch, it's actually in the BIOS if you can imagine. I wonder if that's been the problem the entire time.
