How did it get to be Friday?
Apr. 24th, 2009 05:06 pmFriday snuck up on me, we've been so busy around here!
Kathy (Mrs. Chicken) came over today with a list of toxic plants to avoid and a half dozen plants from her home to donate to our duck enclosure. A quick trip into town to drop off the wheelbarrow at Les Schwab (needs a solid tire) also included another dozen plants and 20 goldfish (plus free duckweed) for the pond. I've planted ground cover, jasmine and a few other quick growing plants the ducks should enjoy: for nibbling, sun protection and nesting. Five solar lights separate the pond area from the rest of the enclosure which I'm hoping will keep folks from accidentally stumbling into the pond in the dark. Or something. :)
The ducklies (as the neighborhood kids are calling them) are swimming wonderfully in the Big Pond, with the ever vigilant Gracie watching with care. She's absolutely marvelous at supervising them, very patient and beginning to understand how they move as a mini-flock. It's an amazing thing to watch, instincts and breeding working together to help her control the ducklies. All she needs to do is shift her weight and they respond, effortlessly. And when she lays down, they hang out around her muzzle and check her fur for dandelions. I'm incredibly impressed but not naive enough to leave them all unsupervised together.
Speaking of neighborhood kids - the place is awash with them. One of the teens, Robert, is helping Josh with the fencing and yardwork. Tim & Wolfie are helping me with the bunnies, looks like Tim may be given permission from his folks to have a rabbit and he's chosen Noir. After everyone finished working together, we all hung out in the pond enclosure and chatted while watching the show.
A very good day.
