British Romantic Comedies and Cranky Old Ladies

You like cranky old ladies? I am going to rock your world.

Keeping Mum is one of the best movies I have EVER seen, especially if you're a fan of British black comedy. Maggie Smith is brilliant, as always, and Rowan Atkinson gets to NOT be a buffoon, and even Patrick Swayze is hilarious as the skeezy golf pro. The weekend I discovered it, I watched this movie three times.

===================================================

Gay/Lesbian titles and Musicals!, but Genres I don't like: Teen anything

What if it were a musical about A Midsummer Night's Dream coming magically true for a gay teenager in a small town? Because Were the World Mine is hysterical, and the music's fantastic. (Not if you're a Shakespeare purist, though, because they get the lyrics for all the brilliant music by putting every line in the play in a blender, and any given verse might have words from Titania, Helena, and three other characters all woven together. :-) But it's fun, and really well done.

===================================================

Series that I'm currently watching and loving include:

Leverage, which is like a weekly modern-day-Robin-Hoods-meet-caper-movie, fantastic and into its second season just this week;

True Blood, the HBO serialization of the Charlaine Harris/Sookie Stackhouse novels -- and the series, also into its second season, is good, whether or not you like the books or even have read them;

Royal Pains, a new show on USA (so you probably can't Netflix it yet, but you can download it or catch it live), sounds stupid in a short description, watch the trailer;

Mental, another new series, only on episode 8 this week, which I'm really enjoying (watch some of the other clips, too, not just this one, for a better idea);

Other shows I almost always enjoy (although I don't actually watch them all all the time) include Raising the Bar, Saving Grace, Burn Notice, NCIS, Criminal Minds, House, Bones, Heroes, Fringe, Lie to Me, and, to my undying shame, Smallville and Supernatural. >:-)

I've ordered Keeping Mum, can't believe I missed a Maggie Smith movie. Geez.

It's funny you mention Were the World Mine, it's in my queue. I'm not a Shakespeare purist at all. Frankly, that sort of purist nonsense applied to Shakespeare makes no sense. His works were always meant for the common folks and drawing more people to his work via modern English is wonderful. I used to play the Moonlighting Taming of the Shrew show when I taught Shakespeare!

As for TV, I already watch Leverage, Royal Pains, Bones, Lie to Me, House and Mental. Haven't read the True Blood books, but may pick up a few at the library to see what the fuss is all about. I'll check the others out, thank you!

Btw, did you ever watch Cupid? Adorable Guido who is either Eros or deluded. Great stuff.

Aside from your disliking horror, we could watch almost everything together.

Good to know!

I like stuff like Doom, but the gross out factor of most horror is obnoxious. And I'm the gal that can watch forensics shows while I eat, so I'm not generally squeamish.

I guess at the end of the day, I think there's enough horror in the world without manufacturing more of it. :/

"Mrs Henderson Presents" - movie
"Transamerica" - movie
"Babette's Feast" - movie
"Coupling" - BritCom series
"The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension" - movie
"Twelve Monkeys" - movie
"The Fountain" - movie
"Kinky Boots" - movie

If you'll watch anime, watch the series "Ghost in the Shell." Make sure you watch it in the order in which it was produced (there are 2 series and 3 movies). It takes a while to get into the characters, but it is absolutely brilliant.

It will not surprise you to know that when I watch movies, I watch the trailers at the beginning and if it looks good, order them right there and then from Netflix. *wink*

Now, onto that list:

"Mrs Henderson Presents" - LOVED IT!
"Transamerica" - Watched with Deanna.
"Babette's Feast" - Ordered via Netflix, thank you!
"Coupling" - Ordered via Netflix, thank you!
"The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension" - been a loooong time
"Twelve Monkeys" - Yep, saw it.
"The Fountain" - Ordered via Netflix, thanks!
"Kinky Boots" - Own it! :)

I've watched some anime, the stuff I like tends to be the stuff other people don't and vice versa. The screaming, crying, tear drop thing annoys the crap out of me. Predictably.

I've ordered a few of the GITS movies to check them out, thank you. :)

GitS has to be watched in the order produced, which means not just movies, and not just the TV series, but both.

There isn't any of the "screaming, crying, tear drop thing" that I recall. It's dark, full of social psychology, violent, and complex.

Go here and make sure your speakers are turned on (an up). I loved it so much that I made my ringtone from this song. ;-)

Evan got me interested in anime, but like you, much of it does nothing for me. The story line in GitS was compelling enough that I watched it while Jay was out of the country, sometimes watched 5 or 6 episodes in a row because I simply couldn't stop.

If you've not seen Saving Grace, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0195234/ you're missing a brit comedy about formerly rich widow, gardening and ....the law. It's a hoot. I've watched it at least 10 times in the last 10 years.

And if you liked that, you'll love "Waking Ned Devine" Another brit comedy along the same lines.

In another genre, if you've never seen The Red Violin, I can't recommend it highly enough. In fact, even if you've seen it, I recommend renting it again.

This is all I can think of at 3:46 am.
