The first thing that strikes me as I flip through the catalog is
I can sum up this catalog simply: Mighty thin beer.
"On to the review:
Practical Protection Magick: Guarding & Reclaiming Your Power by Ellen Dugan. Looks like another Duganesque fluff-piece. Likely a nice introduction for those who need it and a nice read for those who don't. Release date: March 11th.
***My vote: Buy this for a gift and buy Jason Miller's Protection and Reversal Magick for yourself.***
The Un-Spell Book by Mya Om - promises exercises and techniques "to understand and practice the essentials behind all successful magick - focus, will and energy". I must admit, I missed her other book Energy Essentials for Witches and Spellcasters. Release date: January 11th.
***My vote: Made me curious enough to reserve these at the local library to see if they are worth buying as reference materials.***
Healing Wisdom of Birds by Lesley Morrison. Not your typical Llewellyn fair from the looks of it (the cover is practically dull by Llewellyn standards) - the symbology of birds is traced through the ages, from ancient cultures to present. Goddesses, totems and legends explored within. Release date: January 11th.
***My vote: A definite maybe.***
Night of the Witches by Linda Raedisch promises to offer historical perspective on Walpurgis Night. Release date: February 11th.
***My vote: Sounds like a promising addition to one's Sabbath reference section.***
Raymond Buckland has a Solitary Seance: How You Can Talk to the Spirits on Your Own book out that promises "nearly twenty techniques for spirit communication, including dreamwork, tea-leaf reading, table tipping, automatic writing, pendulums, crystal scrying, runes, dominoes, numerology, fire gazing, spirit photography, and tarot". Release date: April 11th.
***My vote: Pass.***
The Demonology of King James I by Donald Tyson. Not a fan of Mr. Tyson, personally, but if you're into this material, this annotated version is likely a good find. Release date: April 11th.
***My vote: Pass.***
Llewellyn 2011 Astrological Calendar (full wall size) featuring Stephanie Pui-Mun Law. I'm not into the fanciful and cutesy stuff, but I must admit, I adore Law's art and own quite a few pieces. Which for someone who considers Neolithic art "too modern", that's quite the achievement. Her symbology will leave you intrigued. If you adored and heartfully miss Susan Seddon Boulet, give Stephanie Pui-Mun Law a chance, you won't be disappointed. Release date: Already in stores.
***My vote: BUY!***
The Illuminated Chakras DVD by Anodea Judith. (Reviewer note: Previously available on VHS) From the author of the very good Wheels of Life and Sevenfold Journey this DVD promises a 28-minute open eye meditation through the chakras. Sounds like a wonderfully relaxing activity and great teaching material. Release date: unspecified.
***My vote: Buy!***
The Healing Power of Trees by Sharlyn Hidalgo. Tagline: "Walk in the footsteps of Druids and tune into the sacred power of trees". All fifteen species of the Fifteen Celtic Tree Calendars are presented here, along with meditations, deities, totems and guides. Release date: unspecified.
***My vote: Pass.***
Henna Magic: Crafting Charms & Rituals with Sacred Body Art by Philippa Faulks. Faulks "explore(s) magical uses of this natural form of body art". Mixing, incorporating magical elements and creating tattoos to "resonate with your spiritual intention", "along with history, traditional uses, design, symbol meanings and henna spells and rituals".
***My vote: Sounds like a lovely combination of fun and beauty, likely to give it a shot.***
Much more to come in 2011, but the above is what caught my eye."
who are these people?
I consider myself a fairly well read occultist, yet with few exceptions, I'm unfamiliar with the authors. Granted, there will always be authors involved in Paths I'm unfamiliar with, but I gather we're dealing with some newer folks on the Llewellyn scene. I can sum up this catalog simply: Mighty thin beer.
