trystinnOne more of the Silky eggs hatched today but the chick had massive neurological problems and what looks like it may have been a hernia. I gave it a few hours to see if it would perk up, but when I went out again just now Salt had pushed it into a corner and covered it with shavings - she's rejected it. Poor thing hadn't improved at all and was cold. I carefully put it out of its misery and cleaned out the rest of the eggs.
There's an odd coincidence this year. Each of our ducks had 11 ducklings, now each of our two cochins hatched three healthy chicks. It will be interesting to see if the numerology works out with little Wendy, whose own eggs are due mid-week. I'll likely check on them this afternoon.
Onyx looks to be broody, again. Despite the fact that she's got three chicks to take care of. Perhaps this is her way of telling me the chicks are old enough to join the coop. I'm not sure of that, but they are big enough, feathered enough, etc. to do without her during the day. They are still curling up with her at night, though so we'll leave things alone for now. I'd let Onyx out for about 6 hours the other day, perhaps she took advantage of Big Blue enough to make that egg or two fertilized. If she wants out, we'll let her out for a few hours. We may be able to get more chicks out of this next brood.
I de-pooped the blue shed coop, which basically entails taking a cat litter scooper and scooping out the poop. Word to the wise, try not to do this when the ladies are laying, they get super upset with you. You'd think I was going after their chicks instead of just tidying up.
Still trying to hope that the brooder hutch will show up soon. Leslie had basically stopped communicating with me and is insisting they will deliver the hutch when its ready. Since they both have 2 door cars, I hope they've figured out a way. Frankly, I think she's likely bullshitting. The odds aren't great that this will be done before Wendy hatches her eggs. *seethe*
