Odd things...

There are several wreaths on the front of our home, each of them gifts from friends, with stars strung across the middles with colored yarn. They are fairly mundane things, having never caused any alarm or concern. Frankly unless you're looking for the stars specifically you are bound to miss them completely. There's also a mezuzah on the front door frame, just to add a small touch of "WHATTHEFUCKitis", which has served as a lovely distraction when church's come a-knocking. Which they do often. We get quite a few missionaries and they've never noticed either, oddly enough.

Inevitably perhaps, someone noticed *something* today - there was a pamphlet stating "The End to False Religion" by the Jehovah's Witless Witness.

The irony.

I had the same pamphlet weilding persons at my door today. I was groggy from my midmorning nap and answered the door very sleepy. The woman there started to tell me she had this pamphlet for me, and all I see is "FALSE RELIGION" on it (damn, the title was sure bold print). Now she had to walk thru my grass, past a very large and prominently displayed Ganesh in the garden...come up the steps and stand by Buddha's head on the railing...and when I politely cut her off and say "aw, no thank you" and smile...she asks me not once but TWICE "are you sure" and seemed a bit offended that I wouldn't take her brochure. And let me tell you, I am completely polite, subdued, and soft when saying "no thank you", but also a bit dismissive I suppose.

Musta been recruitment day.

So then later when Kboy comes home, he's knocking on the front door and we play our usual game of "who iiizzzzzz ziiiiit?" and he says..."I'd like to tell you about the Lord" thru the door! damn, I whip open the front door and brush past him thinking the woman had come back and dropped that litter-ture off when I wasn't looking. But she didn't. Kboy was just being a smartass and had no idea that religious solicitors had been by earlier...lol

Geez, if they'd chosen yesterday to get an area as large as a canvas as Whidbey and Anacortes, there's little we can do.

I love 'no soliciting' signs...at least the idea behind them, which in my opinion is "don't knock on my fuckin door if you aren't known to me"
alas, no one thinks that they are the solicitor in "no soliciting".

One of the things I really appreciated about living in that apartment complex were the signs at entries saying "no soliciting". Silly me in my naivete thinking that people would actually abide by it. In 4 years there were over a dozen people knocking on my door soliciting. Each time I would ask them if they had seen the signs, "oh no, really?" and then they would continue to go to each apartment.
I'm a bitch, so I would call the complex office and turn them which meant maintenance would hunt them down and boot them from the property.

I would suggest several signs, of increasing warnings the closer they get. That way when they ignore them all....you CAN meet them at the door w/ the shotgun cocked.

Have shotgun and four generally useless "guard dogs". At this point, my only hope is that they trip over a dog and one of the bassets drools directly onto their face so they drown to death in my driveway.

We got Jehovah'ed the other day as well...I don't think they even knocked on the door or anything, they just left that same leaflet under our doormat. Stupid fucking shite.

Incidentally, is your Samain celebration planned date-wise yet?

Was sitting with a grieving friend one day when two guys in suits pick their way up her front walk. I answer her the door to save her the trouble. They're all smiles and manners. I ask them what they're selling. They tell me nothing, but they want to tell me about ... I cut them off. You're selling religion!! No thank you. Go away and stay away. And then I close the door.

They haven't been back to hassle my friend since. :)

I wouldn't get paranoid. JWs leave those pamphlets as calling cards when you aren't home or aren't answering the door or don't feel like arguing with them or whatever. The selection of pamphlets is limited and fairly random.

I got that same pamphlet today all the way over in England! It must be the pamphlet of the month for them. We have a mail slot on the door. It's highly annoying at times because my front hall can get littered with pamphlets, flyers and catalogues.

I well remember having a mail slot and the relative joys of them. Don't think I'd get another one, though now that I'm effectively on a rural route - they wouldn't let me anyway.

My parents also live in a rural area. It's interesting that they seem to get more JWs than when they lived in the suburbs.

I have a little plastic skeleton (he even glows in the dark) that hangs on my front door to greet visitors. His name is Charlie. He's not just for Halloween--I plan on making him a Santa hat and bunny ears. I wonder what the JWs thought of him. My husband thinks it probably makes them more determined to save my soul.

I normally like their pamphlets (you know, for the amusement factor) but this one I found insulting.

Exactly - I've a suspicion that even though we technically live in a private community, the community members are allowing these folks to come and door knock.

My Lovely Wife (veshengri.livejournal.com) wrote on the front of it, something to the effect of "It's About Time You'll Be Brought Down. You've Bothered Us Pagans Long Enough." Below that, she wrote "And would you give back the keys to the Capitol when you leave, please?" and stuck it on our front door with tape. I doubt they'll see it, but it gave me a chuckle.

i have a dog like that too...about as actually dangerous to most people as.. well. a plush toy.
fortunately he is a BIG dog, who stands up at the door and tries to go OUT! so he can run! around the block!and give mommy a coronary by running across the street and so on....but it must look really scary, because most of the missionaries leave really fast once he hits the door.
although you never know, our previous dog was a wuv bug and licked everyone, right up until the guy tried to break in, then he tried to eat his hand.
