trystinn: (WTF)
Making rye bread this morning, lots of prep and lots of waiting. I had hoped to use beer but was shocked this morning to find that we're out of it. Alas, alack, alarm! I'll start the challah around 2pm, which gives it plenty of time. Its only in the sixties in our kitchen, fifties outdoors, so the bread is rising in the oven. I've forgotten how chilly May mornings are, and this afternoon only expects to hit 62. The foster buns are enjoying themselves on the back porch, jumping around in the morning sunshine.

Today is Josh's last day at his command, so they are giving him a lunch send off. These tend to be a bit like a Friar's Roast - so I can't wait to hear about it when he comes home. He's considered a cranky hard liner, so this should be good.

Sad news: I think our old microwave is showing signs of impending death. There may be hope of a resurrection, but signs to do not look good. We rarely use it, but somehow its hard to imagine a modern kitchen without one. We're expecting a quiet weekend, with a WIJC meeting tomorrow night to plan Shavuot: the first harvest festival of the Jewish year (Feast of First Fruits here, grain harvest in Israel). And, of course, reminded of my friend Ruth, given the torah portion for Shavuot. I'm looking forward to Shabbos tonight to get us in the mood. and hopefully come up with some ideas for a lay gathering.

Here it is, the labor of a day's work:

Two challahs and one of two (the other we've been nibbling on all afternoon) of light rye.
