Barely got an sleep last night between the dogs and a sort of general inability to get comfortable due to cramping. Hoping it won't spoil the day, I'm still in morning zombie mode at present.

So little updates:

We lost one of the little chicks, looks like a squashing. The other 4 are doing just fine and Mamma is most attentive. They are eating and drinking well, popping around in their pen and getting curious about the world. Scarlett remains her usual friendly, calm self. I've been able to go in and pet her, sing a little to her and best yet, touch the chicks all without her freaking out. Granted, as Scarlett is getting close to the chicken equivalent of Croning, this may be her last litter. She's the backbone of our farm, she's earned a lovely retirement. These chicks are an unexpected blessing. :)

Ruby, another Rhode Island Red, has gone into molt. She looks like she's been to Hell and back, poor gal. Thankfully, she seems to be doing well - eating and drinking, hanging out with Sandy, our nanna chicken extraordinaire.

Big Daddy, aka Big Blue, has been hanging out by the pen supervising the chicks and keeping them safe. We really lucked out with him, he's a marvelous guy. And best yet, given chicken genetics, most of our hens (black, buff & red) will produce blue and black chicks with him.

I need to get the old hutch cleaned out today, so the three little Frizzles coming tomorrow have somewhere to be while they are in quarantine.

Mum sent a Halloween box of decorations, this year the theme was bats! I've got bat garlands, bat candle holder, a set of purple and orange witches "stockings", cute little gothic plaques with Halloween sayings, etc. She's also sent these marvelous black metal spiders, which I adore but Josh is avoiding. :)
